WHO WE ARE

The concept for this accident register came about during discussions by active members of the Blue Mountains adventure community. Because Australia does not have a centralised organisation to collect and collate the information that arises after accidents or near misses in the adventure community it was felt that this site may provide such a service.

The fact that in the past so much vital information about what caused or contributed to an accident has gone "underground" after an incident was a major prompt to keep the data in a readily accessible format as a learning tool for adventurers.

Currently the editorial committee of the Accident Register is comprised of Ian Brown, Richard Delaney and Lucas Trihey. They have extensive experience in adventure activities and a desire to ensure that through the feedback created by this site the adventure community is given an opportunity to learn from past mistakes.

The combined experience of the editorial team includes over 75 years outdoor recreation as well as instruction and training recreationally and professionally in rockclimbing, bushwalking, canyoning, bush searches and vertical rescue. Between them the editorial committee have representation on the board of the Outdoor Recreation Council of Australia (ORCA), membership of the Australian Climbing Instructor's Association (ACIA), membership of the Professional Association of Climbing Instructors (PACI), membership of the BWRS, State Emergency Service (NSW) and many years experience in national park management. Members of the editorial committee are qualified swift water rescue technicians and are nationally qualified vertical rescue instructors.

Editorial Independence

Each serious accident or near-miss report will be compiled and checked by at least two editors before it is posted to the site. In addition, so as to minimise any perceived or actual bias on the part of the editorial committee in reporting accidents it has been decided that if a committee member, an employer or staff of a committee member or any close acquaintances are involved in an incident which is reported on this site, then that committee member will not be involved in reporting the incident.
